Firstly, let’s establish one simple rule: your t-posts should be about two feet longer than the height of your fence. This is why t-posts are typically sold at lengths between 5 and 10 feet. A tall t-post (for example, one that is seven or eight feet) can be very useful if you want to have a particularly tall fence that your animals can’t jump over.

Instead, your greater concern is that they might wander onto a neighbor’s property, or that local kids might try to get into their enclosure. What T-Post Weight Should I Use?

Most commonly, t-posts come in two weights: 1.25 and 1.33 pounds per foot. For most applications, a t-post weighing 1.25 pounds per foot is ideal. When looking for something to withstand high-pressure, it’s best to use a 1.33 pound per foot t-post.

What Purpose Will The Fence Serve?

There’s one big question you need to ask yourself before you pick a t-post for your fence: what purpose will the fence serve? The primary purpose of a fence is to keep animals in or out. However, there are different purposes for different types of fences on a farm.

For example, horse fencing needs to be tall enough to prevent horses from jumping over it, climbing it, or mowing it down with a good canter. Cattle fencing should also be tall, as well as strong enough to withstand leaning or chewing on the wires, while hog fencing should be a bit lower to the ground to prevent the pigs from digging or rooting under the fence line. Steps for Installation

Once you have all the materials and tools you need for your fence installation project, go out to your fence site and follow these steps:

1. Map your fence line. Use your string to mark a straight line between your two corner posts. This will help guarantee that your fence line remains straight all the way across.
2. Space Out Your Posts. Most people install t-posts 8-12 feet apart, depending on the length of the fence line. Use your tape measure to ensure that the posts are evenly spaced (and later, use it again to ensure they’re all equal height.
3. Drive your T-Posts. Use your t-post driver to push the posts into the ground at the appropriate spot. Remember, t-posts should be at least two feet in the ground, so make sure your post ends up standing two feet shorter than it started.
4. Secure the fencing. Now, you can unroll your wire fencing across the length of your fence line. Use the fence stretcher to pull it taught, and then use wire clips to secure the fencing to the t-posts. Make sure to secure the clips on the animal side of the fence, as this will prevent them from coming undone when the animal leans or otherwise puts pressure on the fence.

To install T-posts, you’ll need wooden posts, T-posts, wire clips and staples, and can accomplish the project with a T-post driver, tape measure, some string and a come-along.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to T-post fencing installation, just as the pros do it:

1. Mark the corners: The first step to t-post fencing installation is to determine where the corner of the fence line will be, and the location of any gates you will install. It’s recommended to build the corners and gates with solid wood fence posts that get set in concrete.
2. Line up the posts: Once the corners are set and properly braced, you can run guidelines between them to make sure you place all T-posts in a straight line. With a tape measure, measure out the spacing between the posts to make sure it is even. Typically, you’ll want to set posts eight to 12 feet apart, with 10 to 12 feet being sufficient for a five- to six-strand barbed wire fence. Pay the posts on the ground along the guideline to vary the spacing and to double check the number of posts you will need.
3. Get the posts into position: Set each of the T-posts with their anchor plate at the bottom, perpendicular to the fence line. Face the T-posts based on your intended goal. If you expect animals to place more pressure on the inside of the fence, face the studs inward. If you expect the pressure to be coming from outside of the fence, place the studs outward.
4. Drive the posts: Once the posts are all properly positioned, you can drive them into the ground. They should go down about 18 to 24 inches—deep enough where the anchor is completely buried and there is sufficient support for the posts to stay in place even against potential pressure.
5. Install the wire: Once the posts are all installed, you can then install the wire. It’s important to make sure the wire is sufficiently tense to keep livestock in and predators out. The metal fencing should be stretched and secured at the corners with staples. You can leave approximately 18 to 24 inches of additional wire on the end, and wrap that wire around the mainline to strengthen the connection. Just make sure you don’t overtighten the wire—it should be taut, but it should not be like a stringed instrument.
6. Install wire clips: Using wire clips prevents the wires on the fence from moving up and down and getting pulled away from the posts. The clips should be installed in a stud on the T-post. Hook the wire with one side of the clip and then wrap the other side with a pair of fence pliers.
