When you are thinking about your upcoming construction job, have you considered the type of crane mats that you will need to get the job done the right way? If you didnt already know, there are several types of crane mats; each with its own specific purpose. Below we will cover the different types, along with their uses and the type of construction site they work best at.
These mats are perfect for you if you need to stabilize large track equipment. With this mat type, the wood is shaped into planks, giving your equipment a direct path to and from the worksite.
These are some of the lightest mats that you will encounter. Being so light, they are easily moved around the construction site. If you are not using heavy equipment, then these mats will work for you. They are also good for quick jobs. Great for high traffic areas, these mats are the perfect solution when you need a temporary roadway for other machines and workers that will be going through the construction zone.
Are you going to need to use a lot of heavy machinery? If the answer is yes, these are the mats for you. Outrigging pads are designed to handle rugged terrain as well as mud, hills and mountains. When thinking about your construction zone, if you will need additional stability for the heavy machinery, you should buy these mats.

ALIMATS® are trusted by some of the biggest names in construction, including Balfour Beatty, Grahams Construction, Kier, BAM, FP McCann, Willmott Dixon and Bison Precast on all sorts of high-profile projects: HS2, Lower Thames Crossing, RAF Alconbury, Gatwick Airport, Tideway, Heathrow Airport, London Guildhall, Google HQ Kings Cross, Olympic Park, Tottenham Hotspur and London Bridge.
There are two types of available systems, handleable and non-handleable. They come in steel, aluminium, composite, plastic (UHMW and HDPE) and timber (European/Tropical hardwoods).
ALIMATS®, is handleable and made from interlocking recycled certified extruded aluminium modules. Other handleable systems are manufactured in High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or timber. The problem with HDPE is that it doesnt have sufficient stiffness to work as intended and used timber doesnt have any certification at the time of use.
Weve carried out multiple independent finite element analysis (FEA) simulations on our system. One simulated aluminium, timber and plastic as simply supported beams. Results concluded that timber (D40 Oak) bends five times more than aluminium, and plastic (UHMW) bends 50 times more than aluminium which proves that ALIMATS® are strong and safe.
Another was a compression test to the point of failure on a single 60mm thick module, when applying a 500mm-by-500mm square outrigger load internal rib failure occurred at 463.94t.
One disadvantage of non-handleable systems is that they have to be craned into position. This defeats the object of using crane mats. Cranes should only operate when the mats are insitu.
