I just wonder why we do not see more crude oil stored in bolted panel tanks? It would appear to be a competitve option to the more conventional EFRT with respect to design, installation and maintenance. Do we know what the limitations are - diameter, etc?

So I guess the answer to my question could be that if the operator required API bolted panel tanks then open top is not an option and a fixed roof bolted tank would have a limited capacity of 10,000 Bbls.

Since posting I have been informed that API 12B covers fixed roof tanks used at oil production fields and are limited to 10,000 Bbl capacity. Also that an Amendment to API 12 B was being processed to include open top bolted panel tanks but was not completed.So I guess the answer to my question could be that if the operator required API bolted panel tanks then open top is not an option and a fixed roof bolted tank would have a limited capacity of 10,000 Bbls.

I can remember one open top bolted tank, but it was used as a waste water digestor type tank.

The bolted tanks can be larger than 10,000 with the approval of the purchaser, however it cannot be a API 12B monogramed tank.
The bolted tank is a good design but has fallen out of favor. If the stored material needs full corrosion resistance the bolted tank can ne fabricated with fully coated panels that does not have the coating failure issues of field applied coatings.

Thanks for the response and I note the positive advantages of the bolted tanks, however with respect to storage of crude oil, I do not see any disadvantages?There are some suggestions that bolted tanks may not be able to handle products with high vapour pressure?

These are atmosphere tanks. They are not designed to hold pressure. The gasket material needs to be compatible with the stored product. Bolted tanks have been around a long time. They replaced the wooden tanks. And are still used in crude oil storage. ANd they can be fitted with IFRs when needed.

A bolted tank can have much better corrosion resistance because they are factory coated and with reasonable care during erection have low construction coating failures.
People got used to bolted tanks and the people selling them seemed to carve out their niche and left it there. I dont see how a welded 10,000 BBL tank with a IFR can compete cost wise against a bolted tank as the 10K BBL tank can be erected much faster than the welded tank. But I dont spend other peoples money.
