Importance of Auto Distillation Apparatus | Hosabettu Mohan

The purpose of the distillation of the solution is purification and separation according to its boiling point.

Crude oil is filtered at the Distillation tower as per its boing point at a refinery. However, checking the quality of separated compounds for practical use require Instruments. One of the apparatuses is Auto Distillation Apparatus. Auto Distillation apparatus facilitate the study of the characteristics of the volatile compound to temperature. These volatility characteristics are a critical measurement of the overall performance and safety of hydrocarbon-based fuels. Distillation is crucial for controlling the refining process and product quality. It helps to storage for transporting the compounds and certifying the final products.

ASTM D86 is the Standard Test Method for Distillation of Petroleum Products at Atmospheric Pressure. This method qualitatively determines the boiling range characteristics of petroleum products with a boiling range between 20 and 400°C, at atmospheric pressure. Manual and automated distillation instruments are per this method. Samples are Light and middle distillates, gasoline with or without oxygenates, aviation gasoline, aviation turbine fuels, diesel fuels, biodiesel blends up to 20%, marine fuels, petroleum spirits, white spirits, kerosene, and grades 1 and 2 burner fuels. It is not applicable for products containing appreciable quantities of residual material. Summary of test method depending on the composition of a sample, the vapor pressure, expected boiling characteristics. Analysis Steps are:

1. 100 ml of the sample poured into a distillation flask.

2. When it is heated, the vapor is formed. Vapor temperature is measured.

 3. It is cooled in a condenser tube to become liquid again.

4. The receiver cylinder collects the liquid, the volume measured.

The conditions of the distillation are as per the distillation group of the sample. After the test, the data corrected to barometric pressure examined for conformance to procedural requirements such as distillation rate. The result is the distillation curve (volume % versus the corresponding temperature). One has to redo the test again in case of the conditions have not been met.

Modern automatic Distillation apparatus equipped with:

 1. Automated fire extinguishing system

2. Temperature sensor shall be mounted in a way to center the sensor at the neck of the flask

3.Temperature sensor shall exhibit the same temperature lag, emergent stem effect, and accuracy as the equivalent mercury-in-glass thermometer

4.Auto Distillation has the facility to measure the cetane index, which is a figure which denotes the quality of diesel , based upon its density and volatility. Therefore, a higher cetane index generally indicates that the fuel will combust more quickly in the engine. It is the speed of self-ignition of diesel fuel when injected into hot air through the fuel injector. The cetane index is calculated based on fuel's density and distillation range(ASTMD86).Cetane number a quantity indicating the ignition properties of diesel fuel relative to cetane as a standard. It provides information about the ignition delay.

5.Driveability index is a measure of a gasoline's performance across several operating conditions, covering cold start and warmed up operations. It incorporates elements of the gasoline distillation profile and its ethanol content.

As per ASTM D 86, Petroleum products, Natural gasoline, Light and middle distillates automotive spark-ignition engine fuels, aviation gasoline, aviation turbine fuels, diesel fuels, petroleum spirits, white spirit, and naptha analyzed.

As per ASTM D, volatile, organic liquids boiling between 30 deg C to 350 deg C, Hydrocarbons, oxygenated compounds, and chemical intermediates analyzed.

AS per ASTM D850, the Industrial aromatic hydrocarbons having a boiling range between 30 deg C to 250 deg C analyzed.

Solvents are liquids that can dissolve or disperse a particular substance or ingredient. Therefore solvents are essential ingredients for coating, paint, and inks. They are products of refineries and petrochemical plants. They disperse pigments in the paint solution and evaporate after painting. How fast the paint dries depends on how quickly the solvent evaporates. Solvents with a narrow boiling range and low initial boiling point evaporate more rapidly than solvents with broader boiling ranges. For different applications, the behavioral change in solvents is essential to provide the required solvency, evaporation rate, dry time, etc. To determine distillation characteristics of solvents with a broader boiling range, such as petroleum spirits, naphthas, and white spirits, ASTM D86 is applicable.

For the determination of the purity of a solvent, the following methods are useful:

1)ASTM D850 for organic liquids boiling between 30 and 350 °C

2) ASTM D for aromatic hydrocarbons ( benzene, toluene) boiling point between 30 and 250 °C.

The results of the automated atmospheric distillation apparatus are the following parameters:

A) Initial boiling point IBP: Temperature when the first drop of distillate falls into the flask.

B) Final boiling point FBP: Maximum temperature during distillation.

C) Recovery: Distillate in the receiving cylinder.

D)Residue: Residue in the distillation flask.

E)Drypoint: Temperature when the last drop of distillate evaporates from the bottom.

F) Distillation curve( graph of temperature vs % volume)

The distillation units are the major lab equipment for refineries. Every refinery has many Distillation apparatus, which are running 24 hours a day.

Other markets for auto-distillation are Independent test laboratories, Terminals / Fuel depots (storage and distribution of fuels) - Customs - Solvent producer - Chemical industry - Automotive industry - Airlines - Fuel ministry regulation's lab - Mobile labs - Military (aircraft, boats, vehicles, diesel, and jet fuel testing).
