Titanium Grade 1

The first of four – titanium grade 1 is the softest, most ductile commercially pure grade. Offering high impact toughness and resistance, it’s the perfect choice for applications where formability is required.

Titanium grade 1 tubes and plates are suitable for:

  • automotive parts
  • airframe structures
  • dimensionally stable anodes

Titanium Grade 2

Titanium grade 2 is unalloyed titanium, commonly known as Titanium Beta-C. It’s considered to be ‘commercially pure’, is lightweight and offers excellent resistance to corrosion.

Grade 2 has strong weldability properties, making it an excellent choice for applications that require welding. Other applications include:

  • architecture
  • desalination
  • exhaust pipe shrouds/heat shield
  • power generation

Titanium Grade 3

Although less common than the other three commercially pure metals, titanium grade 3 is no less important. It provides similar ductility and formability as grades 1, 2 and 4, but higher mechanical properties.

Grade 3 is ideal for:

  • chlorate manufacturing
  • hydro-carbon processing
  • marine

Titanium Grade 4

Out of all four grades of commercially pure titanium (grades 1-4), titanium grade 4 provides the most strength. One of the biggest benefits of this grade is that it offers a low level of ductility and can be cold formed.

Its qualities mean titanium grade 4 can be used in a range of environments but is mostly used in:

  • aerospace
  • chemical processing
  • industrial

Grade 4 is formed into bars, sheets and wires and has recently found a niche within the medical industry to produce surgical hardware.

Titanium Grade 5

The most commercially available titanium-based alloy, worldwide. Titanium grade 5 is an alpha-beta alloy, renowned for its high strength and toughness, and alloyed with 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. It can also be referred to as Ti 6Al-4V or the ‘workhorse’ of alloys.

The characteristics of titanium grade 5 such as good weldability and fabrication, make it ideal for:

  • aerospace
  • chemical processing
  • marine
  • medical

Titanium Grade 7

In terms of mechanical and physical properties, titanium grade 7 is like grade 2 – only it features palladium, an impurity found in ‘pure metals’ which makes it an alloy.

Guaranteeing great weldability, fabrication, resistance to corrosion and helping to reduce acids, titanium grade 7 is perfect for:

  • chemical processing
  • desalination
  • power generation

It can be easily formed into bars, plates, sheets, tubes, wires and rods.

Titanium Grade 9

Titanium grade 9, sometimes referred to as Ti 3Al-2.5V, is made from titanium with 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium. The strength of titanium grade 9 falls between that of grade 4 and 5 but is more formable and weldable. It also weighs 60% less than steel and has good cold rolling properties.

Great for tubing, pipes and vessels, titanium grade 9 is typically used for:

  • aerospace
  • automotive
  • offshore oil and gas

Titanium Grade 11

Titanium grade 11 is most like grade 1 but with a little palladium for extra corrosion resistance. The palladium provides protection against crevice erosion and reduces acid in chloride environments and comes in useful for:

  • chemical processing
  • chlorate manufacturing
  • marine

This grade is usually formed into titanium rods or tubes.

Titanium Grade 12

Renowned for its quality weldability, Titanium grade 12 provides a lot of strength at high temperatures and possesses similar characteristics to 300 series stainless steel.

When it comes to forming titanium grade 12, there are several options – be it press brake, hydropress, stretch or drop hammer – making it ideal for many different applications, including:

  • shell and heat exchangers
  • chemical manufacturing
  • marine
